This historical sweet shop of Delhi was running continuously for 225 years, but due to economic reasons, in September 2018, a chapter in the history of the capital Delhi ended forever. Many scenes of this shop were also shot in the year 1954 in Meena Kumari's film 'Chandni Chowk'.

What is the history of 'Ghantewala'?
Lala Sukhlal Jain, a resident of Jaipur's Amber, started this shop. Actually, Sukhlal Jain had come here thinking of starting a sweet business in Delhi. After coming here, he first started selling Mishri-Mawa on a cart. But when slowly people started recognizing him, the demand for his Mishri-Mawa started increasing everywhere. After this, in 1790, he opened a sweet shop in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.
How did the name 'Ghantewala' come about?
When this shop was started in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. At that time Delhi was ruled by Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. When Shah Alam's ride used to pass in front of the shop, his elephant used to stop in front of this shop. Until he eats the sweets here, he does not move forward and used to stand there ringing the bell around his neck. Since then people came to know this shop by the name of 'Ghantewala'. However, some people also say that in the early days Lala Sukhlal Jain used to sell sweets by ringing a bell, hence the name 'Ghantewala'.

Everyone is crazy from Mughal to English
Not only the Mughals but also the British were fond of sweets and snacks in the historic and famous sweet shop 'Ghantewala' of Chandni Chowk. Their sweets were not only famous in Delhi, but tourists from outside states also used to come here to taste the sweets of this shop. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Mohammad Rafi, Morarji Desai were also fond of 'Jalebi' and 'Sohan Halwa' made from ghee of Ghantawala. The police used to be stationed here on Diwali night to control the line of customers.
The owner of 'Ghantewala' had an 'Impala car'
In the 70s Vasant Lal Jain, the owner of 'Ghantewala' used to go to the shop in his 'Impala car'. At that time only the 'Jain family' in Old Delhi had such an expensive car. When this car used to be parked outside the shop, there used to be a crowd of people in Chandni Chowk to see it. Earlier this shop used to be at Fauhare Chowk of Chandni Chowk.

In the year 1991, the terrorists had left behind a bag full of bombs. During this, the employee of the shop got a clue of this, after which this bag was taken out. There was an explosion in it, in which many people died. Today this shop may have been closed, but even today a large number of people come to visit this shop.
